Central Vision Care

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in adults, affecting the part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed sight. We specialize in detecting and managing it early — employing advanced techniques to help preserve your vision.

Understanding AMD

When the Center Blurs

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the gradual deterioration of the macula, the central area of the retina. It impairs central vision — making reading, driving, and recognizing faces challenging — while peripheral vision typically remains intact.

Early detection makes all the difference. Call us at (818) 841-1212 or use the form to schedule your evaluation.

Our Approach

Detecting & Managing AMD

From early screening to ongoing management, our care is built around preserving and enhancing the vision you rely on every day.

Comprehensive Exams

Regular, thorough eye exams are the key to catching early signs of macular degeneration. We evaluate your overall eye health and look closely for any changes in the macula.

Advanced Imaging

We use cutting-edge technology like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and retinal photography to capture detailed images of the retina and precisely monitor any progression.

Personalized Plans

Based on the type and stage of your condition, we build a customized strategy — from nutritional guidance to coordinating advanced therapy and low-vision support.

Two Forms

Dry & Wet AMD

There are two primary forms of macular degeneration. Identifying which one you have — and at what stage — guides the right treatment path.

Dry AMD

The more common form, characterized by thinning of the macula and the accumulation of drusen — tiny protein deposits. It progresses gradually, and consistent monitoring is essential.

  • Nutritional therapy rich in antioxidants — vitamins C and E, lutein, and zinc
  • Specialized glasses and low-vision aids to enhance daily life
  • Regular monitoring to track any changes over time

Wet AMD

Less common but more severe, wet AMD involves abnormal blood vessels growing beneath the retina that leak blood and fluid. It progresses more rapidly, so timely treatment is critical.

  • Anti-VEGF therapy — periodic injections that block abnormal blood vessel growth and prevent fluid leakage
  • Laser photocoagulation to seal leaking retinal blood vessels and limit damage
  • Close coordination with retinal specialists for ongoing care

Know the Signs

Symptoms to Watch For

With macular degeneration, you first lose the ability to see fine details — faces, fine print, and color. If you notice any of these changes, don't wait to be seen.

Dark or blurred areas in the center of your vision
Decreased sharpness and clarity of vision
Diminished or changed color perception
Difficulty reading small print or menus
Trouble recognizing faces
Trouble seeing while driving, especially at night

Personalized Care

Preserving the vision you rely on

While there's no cure for macular degeneration, the right care can slow its progression and protect your sight. Our optometric team monitors your macula over time, guides nutrition and lifestyle changes that make a real difference, and coordinates advanced treatment whenever it's needed.

We also offer low-vision support to help you adapt and maintain your independence — because your quality of life matters as much as your vision.
