Finding contact lenses that address both astigmatism and age-related near focusing changes can be a challenge. Johnson & Johnson announced the U.S. launch in 2025 of ACUVUE OASYS MAX 1-Day MULTIFOCAL for ASTIGMATISM, a daily disposable multifocal toric lens. It is designed for people who need correction for astigmatism as well as different viewing distances, but product design alone cannot determine whether a lens will suit an individual eye.

What does multifocal for astigmatism mean?

Astigmatism occurs when the eye’s focusing shape causes light to focus unevenly. A toric contact lens is designed to correct this optical difference. Multifocal optics add different zones or powers to support near, intermediate, and distance vision, which may be relevant as the eye’s ability to focus up close changes with age. The combination can require careful fitting so the lens orientation and visual performance work for the wearer.

The daily disposable schedule means a fresh pair is used according to the prescribed daily wearing instructions and discarded afterward. It avoids a reusable lens case, but it does not remove the need for clean hands, safe handling, or professional follow-up. Never sleep in lenses unless specifically directed by your eye care professional.

Johnson & Johnson describes this as the first and only daily disposable multifocal toric contact lens for astigmatism in its U.S. launch announcement. That is the manufacturer’s description of the product category at launch, not a statement about an individual patient’s results or an office’s inventory.

What a fitting considers

A contact lens evaluation includes your prescription, corneal measurements, eye health, tear film, and visual priorities. The clinician may assess how the lens centers and moves and how well you see at different distances. Reading, screens, night driving, and work tasks can all inform the conversation. Some people adapt to multifocal contact lenses quickly; others need time, adjustments, or a different vision correction plan.

Tell your optometrist if you have dry-eye symptoms, fluctuating clarity, previous difficulty with contacts, or specific demands such as prolonged computer work. Contact lenses must be prescribed and fit for your eyes. Do not use another person’s lenses or substitute a new brand or design without approval.

Ask about suitability and availability

A 2025 U.S. launch does not mean every office carries this lens. If the design interests you, ask whether it is appropriate for your prescription and whether it is currently available through the practice. Your clinician can also discuss other options, including glasses or different contact lens schedules, if they better match your needs.
